Biographical Sketch & CV

After earning a Master's degree in computer science from the University of Illinois in 1981, Stephen V. Rice embarked on a career as a computer scientist and software developer.  Thirty-eight years later, he continues to create leading-edge software systems.  This path has taken him from the 40th employee of Oracle Corp. in 1982, to simulation programming languages for CACI, optical character recognition at UNLV, computer audio perception for Comparisonics, and now genomics software for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  In 1996 he received a Ph.D. in computer science from UNLV.

Dr. Rice has made important contributions in pattern recognition and artificial intelligence; database systems, search engines, and data mining; programming language design and implementation; computer simulation and modeling; and algorithms and data structures.  Along the way, he devoted ten years of his career to training the next generation, teaching computer science at colleges in underserved regions (northwest New Mexico and Mississippi).
